Introducing, Fr. John Dear, S.J.—

John Dear, S.J., author of Christianity and Vegetarianism: Pursuing the Nonviolence of Jesus, received his Masters in Divinity from the Berkeley Theological Seminary, and has served as Executive Director for the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the oldest interfaith peace organization in the United States, and has taught theology at Fordham University. The author of more than 15 books on Christian discipleship, Fr. Dear resides in New York City.

With powerful analysis of the cruelty, environmental degradation, and health problems associated with meat production and consumption, Fr. John Dear, S.J., makes the case that Christians should be vegetarians. Says Dear, “I am convinced that society will look back on human arrogance and cruelty toward other animals with the same horror and disbelief that we presently reserve for atrocities committed against human beings.”

Introducing Dr. Richard Schwartz:

Dr. Richard Schwartz argues that Jewish values mandate vegetarianism. Dr. Schwartz discusses the Jewish mandates to protect one’s health, respect the environment, show compassion for animals, promote peace, and eradicate poverty, arguing that each of these values, put into practice, requires vegetarianism, and that all of them together make an unassailable case for Jewish vegetarianism.

Dr. Schwartz is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the College of Staten Island and the author of multiple books, including the recently reissued Judaism and Vegetarianism (Lantern).

An introduction to Dr. Schwartz’s analysis is offered by Rabbi David Rosen, former Chief Rabbi of Ireland (1978 to 1985) and presently the President of both the International Council of Christians and Jews and the World Conference on Religion and Peace.
